Total Health Makeover Diet Plan Review

Total Health Makeover Diet Plan - Overview

Health guru Marilu Henner's Total Health Makeover is a wide-ranging compilation of health-advice on almost every health issue you can imagine, including diet and nutrition. Some of the advice is excellent, some of it is not.

Like Fit for Life, Marilu Henner's Total Health Makeover believes in the notion of food combining - eat fruit alone, carbs with veggies and proteins with veggies, but NOT protein with starch. Other no-no's include: no processed sugars, no white flour, no caffeine, no meat, no alcohol, no dairy and no salt.

Also, Henner states that sugar robs the body of B-vitamins and depletes calcium from hair, blood, bones and teeth. (Not true). She says that sugar is not partially digested in the mouth by saliva. (Not true).

Also, Henner asserts that cow's milk is one of the causes of the abnormal increase in weight and height of humans(!) and that dairy foods are linked to cancer, diabetes and even osteoporosis! (Not true).

Also, Henner claims that dairy foods are a poor source of calcium and that citrus foods help to reduce calcium in bones. The truth is, dairy foods are among the best sources of calcium, and vitamin C (found in citrus foods like oranges and grapefruit) helps boost our absorption of calcium!

Henner's recipes rely heavily on soy products which while good to have once or twice a week, are not recommended in large quantity as they may become toxic. For example, Lon White, MD, MPH, senior neuroepidemiologist at the University of Hawaii says:

"At some point - if the soy molecules are as potent as [we think] they are - there will be potent [adverse] effects."

White, for one, worries that soy may speed the aging of brain cells. He recently found evidence that the brains of elderly people who ate tofu at least twice a week for 30 years were aging faster than normal. Tests designed to assess memory and analytical ability showed that their brains functioned as if they were four years older than their actual age, were published in the April 2000 issue of the Journal of the American College of Nutrition.

Another fear is that the estrogen-like substances in soy may dampen the function of the thyroid. Some experts believe that consuming 40 milligrams of isoflavones a day can slow the production of thyroid hormone.
