Scarsdale Diet Review

Scarsdale Diet - Overview

A very famous diet from the 1970s, written by Dr Herman Tarnower, the Scarsdale Diet weight-reducing plan provides: 43 percent protein, 22.5 percent fat and 34.5 percent carbohydrates.

You follow the weight-reducing plan (about 1000 calories) only for 2 weeks at a time and then the Scarsdale keep-trim program. The keep-trim program allows more calories but also contains a large number of banned foods.

Like many of the fixed-formula, high protein diets, the Scarsdale Diet only causes weight loss because of the reduced calories - not because of the nutrient-formula.

Scarsdale Diet - Claims

  • Fast weight loss (10-20 pounds/ 2 weeks).
  • Simple to follow.

Scarsdale Diet - Drawbacks

  • Too low in calories for optimum health.
  • A very strict diet plan, with restricted food choices.
  • Recommending such a high protein intake can (in practice) lead dieters to consume more fat than is safe for their health.

Scarsdale Diet - Summary

  • 1000 calories seems too low for our taste. We prefer to recommend higher calorie diets. But may be beneficial for some dieters in small doses, if they have little weight to lose.
