Scan Diet Review

Scan Diet - Overview

The Scan Diet, developed by a Scandinavian doctor, is based around 15 soy-based powdered meal-replacements (to be mixed with water). There are three variants of the Scan Diet: The Attack Plan (1200 calories - quick weight loss), the Balance Plan (1500 calories - medium weight loss) and the Control Plan (1800 calories - weight maintenance).

The cost of the diet is high. For example, the Attack Plan requires 5 powdered meals a day, at a cost of $300 a month. The other diet plans are less expensive, but all require some powdered meals.

The Scan Diet is easy to follow. Apart from the powdered meal-replacements, the Attack Plan permits only fruit and vegetables. The Balance Plan includes 3 powdered meals plus fruit, vegetables, pasta, rice and a little meat. The Control Plan requires one or two powdered meals plus a wider range of whole foods.

The Scan Diet is nutritionally balanced, with a lot of fiber. It comes with a set of instructions, although the level of detail is somewhat inadequate.

Like all meal-replacement diets, the big question about the Scan Diet is whether the weight loss benefits (of what is a very artificial way of eating) are sustainable when you leave the diet and start cooking and preparing meals for yourself.

Clinical trials for the Scan Diet have focused on weight loss achieved when eating the powdered soy meals. There is no clear evidence that the Scan Diet is good for lasting weight loss or that it helps improve eating habits.

Scan Diet - Claims

  • Healthy, balanced diet.
  • Includes soy for extra health.
  • High in fiber.
  • Effective weight loss.

Scan Diet - Drawbacks

  • A diet of powdered meal-replacements does not seem like a long term solution to weight loss.
  • At $300 per month for the quick weight loss plan, it's expensive.
  • Doesn't teach you how to eat properly.
  • Not a good diet plan for families.

Scan Diet - Summary

  • Not recommended. Although meal replacement diets may be effective for some dieters, especially those suffering from severe obesity, they are not a long term solution.
