No Carb Diet

No Carbs - Not Healthy or Good for Weight Loss

Eating no carbs is neither healthy, nor beneficial for weight loss. Even the most extreme dietary phases of popular low-carbohydrate diets permit some carbs. So a no-carb diet is not a sensible option for weight reduction or good health.

Atkins Diet Induction Phase - Very-Low-Carb But Not No-Carb Diet

The Induction Phase of the Atkins Diet is probably the closest thing to a no-carb diet that you are likely to come across. But some carbs are allowed. This diet phase - which Dr Atkins says should last "for a minimum of 14 days" - permits a maximum of 20 grams of carbohydrate a day, mostly by eating salad greens and other vegetables, although some carb-containing cheeses are permitted. The rule of thumb Dr Atkins advises, when counting carbs in cheese is to reckon on 1oz of cheese as having one gram of carbs.

Debate About No-Carb Diets and Very-Low-Carb Diets

Supporters of low-carb diets (eg. Atkins Diet, Zone Diet, South Beach Diet) say that carb-cravings and associated conditions like insulin-resistance, unstable blood-glucose levels, metabolic syndrome X and obesity-levels are the result of over-consumption of carbs, especially refined carbs. While the connection between excessive consumption of refined carbs and ill-health is now well-documented, there is considerable controversy about the nutritional status of unrefined carbs or low glycemic index carbs. At present, most nutritionists and dietitians regard these 'good carbs' as essential to good diet nutrition. Also, second generation lower-carb diets like South Beach Diet are moving towards a diet-plan which includes more carbs.
