Medifast Diet Program

Medifast offers two different diet programs: a very low calorie diet for obese patients, and a weight loss diet program for the general public.

1. Medifast Very Low Calorie Diet

Medifast's very-low-calorie-diet (VLCD) is doctor-supervised and comprises a program of fortified liquid (and solid) meal replacements, containing 450-500 calories per day. Medifast products (which may be used separately or as part of the diet) include a wide range of shakes, soups and bars, including diabetic and kosher products. The Medifast program is available from over 15,000 doctors in America and in several foreign countries.

Medifast Lifestyles

In addition to the very low calorie meal replacement diet, Medifast also offers a program of patient support, called Lifestyles, which prepares patients for the task of maintaining their weight loss after completing the low-calorie diet. It comprises a comprehensive education program, including instruction on nutrition, behavior modification and physical activity, plus a quarterly newsletter.

Who is the Medifast Diet Program Designed For

The very-low-calorie diet program is restricted to mature patients with a Body Mass Index of 30+. Patients who are pregnant, lactating or who have certain conditions (eg. angina cancer, diabetes, renal disease, or bulimia) are not admissable.

Medifast Diet Program - Expected Weight Reduction

Weight loss is doctor-supervised and customised from from patient to patient. The average weight loss is 3-5 pounds per week. The weight reduction phase lasts about 16 weeks and the return to eating phase 4-6 weeks. During the weight reduction phase, participants must use Medifast food replacement products.

2. Medifast Take Shape for Life Program

Available to the general public, the Medifast Take Shape for Life Program comprises products are offered by "Health Advisors", who provide ongoing encouragement and information to the clients. Meal replacement products may be ordered online, and there is a medical phone number available to answer questions about Medifast food plans.
