Chromium & Weight Loss

Chromium is found in tiny amounts in many foods. It helps the body burn fat, build muscle, and control blood sugar. Chromium deficiency is rare and there is no recommended dietary allowance for this mineral.

Chromium Picolinate Weight Loss Pills

Some manufacturers of diet pills, weight loss pills and dietary supplements claim that a synthetic chromium compound called chromium picolinate assists weight loss. But this claim is not proven.

Richard A. Anderson, lead scientist at the United States Department Of Agriculture's Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center, has studied chromium supplements in many contexts over the last 20 years, and he's never seen the supplements change a person's body weight. In the journal Nutrition Reviews, he says:

 

"Chromium is only a small part of the puzzle in weight loss and body composition, and its effects, if present, will be small compared with those of exercise and a well-balanced diet."

Chromium Picolinate is Not a Short Cut to Weight Loss and May Cause Ill-health

Taking extra chromium picolinate or adding chromium supplements to your diet is not the answer to weight loss. Indeed, too much chromium may lead to kidney failure.
