Body Toning for Weight Loss

Introduction
Toning equipment (whether machine or belt) is designed to produce muscle contractions by stimulating the nerves which control the muscle fibers.

This stimulation is achieved by attaching a pad (or pads) to different areas of the body (tummy, thighs etc.) and passing small electrical currents through it. Prices for this toning equipment vary from about $100-$300.

Risks
Anyone who is pregnant, diabetic, or who has a serious medical problem or a heart pace-maker, should not use this toning equipment. For latest details, please consult the manufacturers.

(A) Slimming and toning claims
Some manufacturers make no weight loss claims. Instead, they claim that the above mentioned electrical stimulation will tone your body leaving it firmer and flatter. Although they may not actually use terms like slim or slimmer, the clear impression is that this toning equipment makes you slimmer.

Verdict
As an expensive form of massage, it may be quite pleasurable. However, if you want to reduce fat or make yourself slimmer, you're wasting your time.

(B) Weight loss claims
Other manufacturers go further. In addition to toning equipment, they offer a reduced calorie weight loss diet. They claim that if you tone your body and follow the diet you will lose weight and get slim.

Verdict
If you follow the reduced-calorie diet you will lose weight. But you don't need the toning. By itself, toning does nothing to improve weight loss.
